Overview

Under general supervision, directs the day-to-day activities of the Medical Records Coding Team. Ensures health records and coding of medical records are processed accurately and in a timely manner. Performs quality and productivity reviews for the coding process. Compiles data and provides statistic reports to department and/or other departments as requested.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(*Essential Functions)

  1. Assists in hiring and monitoring staff productivity.
  2. Assures quality improvement of coded and abstracted data through continuous quality auditing and monitoring.
  3. Compiles reports to evaluate productivity and accuracy of coding.
  4. Participates in the analysis and trending of statistical data for specified patient populations to identify opportunities for improvement.
  5. Assists with chart reviews as needed.
  6. Oversees coding guidelines to ensure timeliness and accuracy, and maintains discharges not billed/AR days at expected level.
  7. Utilizes coding knowledge to train and advise coding staff on the correct use of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) Coding System, Coding Software and Abstracting System.
  8. Supervises and schedules assigned staff.
  9. Counsels, trains new staff, assists with student activities and conducts performance evaluations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operational policies and procedures related to medical records.
  • Knowledge of Health Information Management theory, principles, practices, techniques, concepts and policies.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics, accounting, software products and understanding of office equipment.
  • Must be personal computer literate.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to set and meet goals for the department.
  • Ability to work with employees at all levels and with external parties in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion, integrity, confidentiality and profession.
  • Must be professional, pleasant and promote a positive image of Methodist Hospitals


EDUCATION

  • Graduation from a recognized post high school educational program accredited by the AHIMA in Health Information Technology and/or Administration.
  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required
  • Associates Health Information Required
  • 3 years of Healthcare/Medical - Inpatient or Outpatient Coding experience Required
  • 1 year supervisory experiuence is Preferred
  • RHIA - Registered Health Info Administrator or
  • RHIT - Registered Health Info Technician
